Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flemings left hand rule GCSE?

Used for the MOTOR effect. Thumb = Motion (force), First finger = Field (magnetic), Second finger = Current. Use your LEFT hand and hold fingers at right angles.

How does a simple motor work?

Current flows through a coil in a magnetic field. The motor effect produces a force. The split-ring commutator reverses current direction each half turn to keep the coil spinning the same way.

How does electromagnetic induction work?

Moving a conductor through a magnetic field (or changing the field) induces a potential difference. This is the generator effect. Increasing speed, field strength, or number of turns increases the induced p.d.

Is transformer content Triple Science only?

Yes, transformer calculations and detailed electromagnetic induction are Triple Science only. Combined Science students need basic understanding of the motor effect and Flemings left hand rule.
