Frequently Asked Questions

What is a life cycle assessment (LCA)?

LCA examines environmental impact at each stage: extracting raw materials, manufacturing, using the product, and disposal. It considers energy use, water use, pollution, and waste.

How is potable water made GCSE?

UK water: Filter to remove solids → Sterilise (chlorine, ozone, or UV) to kill microorganisms. Desalination (sea water): Distillation or reverse osmosis - both require lots of energy.

What is the Haber process GCSE?

N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃. Conditions: 450°C, 200 atmospheres, iron catalyst. This is a compromise between rate and yield. Ammonia is used to make fertilisers.

Is the Haber process Triple Science?

The Haber process and NPK fertilisers are Triple Science only. Combined Science students focus on water treatment and life cycle assessments.
