Frequently Asked Questions
What is the reactivity series GCSE?
From most to least reactive: Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Carbon, Zinc, Iron, Hydrogen, Copper, Silver, Gold. Remember: Please Stop Calling Me A Careless Zebra, Instead Try Calling Her Silly Goat.
What is oxidation and reduction GCSE?
OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons. Also: Oxidation is gaining oxygen or losing hydrogen. Reduction is losing oxygen or gaining hydrogen.
What happens when acids react with metals?
Acid + Metal → Salt + Hydrogen. The metal must be above hydrogen in the reactivity series. Example: Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen
How does electrolysis work GCSE?
Electrolysis uses electricity to decompose ionic compounds (molten or in solution). Positive ions move to the negative electrode (cathode) and gain electrons. Negative ions move to the positive electrode (anode) and lose electrons.
