Frequently Asked Questions

What is exothermic and endothermic GCSE?

Exothermic reactions release energy to surroundings (temperature increases). Examples: combustion, neutralisation. Endothermic reactions take in energy from surroundings (temperature decreases). Examples: thermal decomposition, photosynthesis.

How do you draw reaction profiles GCSE?

X-axis = progress of reaction. Y-axis = energy. For exothermic: products lower than reactants. For endothermic: products higher than reactants. The hump shows activation energy.

How do you calculate bond energy change?

Energy change = Energy in (bonds broken) - Energy out (bonds formed). If the answer is positive = endothermic. If negative = exothermic.

Are fuel cells Triple Science only?

Yes, fuel cells and chemical cells in detail are Triple Science only content. Combined Science students only need to know basic exothermic/endothermic concepts.
