Frequently Asked Questions
What is the structure of an atom GCSE Chemistry?
Atoms have a central nucleus containing protons (positive) and neutrons (neutral), surrounded by electrons (negative) in shells/energy levels. The atomic number = number of protons. Mass number = protons + neutrons.
How do you work out electron configuration GCSE?
Electrons fill shells in order: 2 in the first shell, 8 in the second, 8 in the third. Example: Sodium (11 electrons) = 2,8,1. The number of electrons in the outer shell determines the group number.
What are the Group 1 trends GCSE Chemistry?
Going down Group 1 (alkali metals): reactivity increases, melting/boiling points decrease, density increases. They all react with water to produce hydrogen gas and an alkaline solution.
What are the Group 7 trends GCSE Chemistry?
Going down Group 7 (halogens): reactivity decreases, melting/boiling points increase. More reactive halogens can displace less reactive ones from their compounds (halogen displacement reactions).
