How to Get a Grade 9 in GCSE Science

Getting a Grade 9 in GCSE Science is achievable with the right approach. As a Head of Science with over 12 years of teaching experience, I have seen hundreds of students achieve top grades by following a structured revision strategy. Here is exactly what you need to do.
1. Master the Specification
The single most important thing you can do is know the AQA specification inside out. Every exam question is directly linked to a specification point. Download the specification from AQA and use it as your revision checklist. Tick off each point as you study it, and you will never be surprised by an exam question.
2. Active Recall Over Passive Reading
Reading your notes over and over feels productive, but it is one of the least effective revision methods. Instead, use active recall: close your book and try to write down everything you remember about a topic. Use flashcards, practice questions, and self-testing. Research shows active recall improves long-term retention by up to 50% compared to re-reading.
3. Practice Past Papers Under Exam Conditions
Past papers are your best friend. Start practising them at least 3 months before the exam. Time yourself strictly, write in silence, and mark your answers honestly using the mark scheme. Pay close attention to how marks are allocated — this teaches you exactly what examiners are looking for.
4. Learn the Command Words
Many students lose marks not because they do not know the science, but because they misunderstand the question. Learn what each command word means: "Describe" means state what happens, "Explain" means give reasons why, "Evaluate" means weigh up pros and cons with a conclusion, and "Compare" means identify similarities and differences.
5. Focus on Required Practicals
AQA has 21 required practicals across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These are guaranteed to appear in your exams. Know the method, variables, expected results, and how to analyse data for each practical. This alone could be worth 15-20% of your marks.
6. Use Spaced Repetition
Instead of cramming everything the night before, space your revision out over weeks and months. Review topics at increasing intervals: study it today, revisit it tomorrow, then in 3 days, then in a week, then in 2 weeks. This method is scientifically proven to be the most effective way to remember information long-term.
7. Do Not Neglect Maths Skills
Around 20% of your GCSE Science marks involve mathematical skills. Make sure you can confidently rearrange equations, calculate percentages, draw and interpret graphs, use standard form, and convert units. Practice these skills regularly alongside your science revision.
Top tip: Create a revision timetable that covers all three sciences equally. Many students focus too much on their favourite subject and neglect the others. Balance is key to achieving Grade 9 across all papers.
